1997 was a big year for the Swoosh. Scottie Pippen debuted his first true signature sneaker, the Air Pippen 1, and Michael's Air Jordan 13 became an instant classic, and the annual Air Max release was - and probably still is - the best to date. And then came the game-changing Nike Air Foamposite.
Never before has a sneaker been as ambitious as the Nike Air Foamposite. Of course, these days we have advanced technology with lace-up sneakers and 4-print soles - only God knows what's next. But in 1997, things were pretty typical for basketball shoes. Leather, mesh and suede were ideal fabrics, but Nike decided let's make a completely different synthetic material that was (at the time) lightweight, flexible and didn't flex. The material was space age crap, and quite appropriatelyoh that the sneakers looked like aliens too. However, to this day, the material is not dead - the sneaker still has a devoted following among the sneaker community.
Now Foam Fiends can express themselves in a new way, thanks to this Air Max 97 with a very special edition. Featuring the OG Foamposite One "Royal" colorway made famous by Orlando's Penny Hardaway, this pair wears the iconic Royal Blue with glitter, an icy outsole and a white mini-Swoosh. Its black upper, like the OG, features nubuck on the overlays and unforgettable woven mesh on the tongues. The traction and heel also imitate foamposite, but replace straight ones with wavy ones - an obvious call to the overlays of the 97s. The carbon fiber midfoot plates, as well as the visible air units, are also finished in jet black. Foamposite-like badges and a crisp white midsole complete the design.
